Being a parent is hard enough. But being a parent with Instagram, Twitter and Facebook? Near impossible. At least that’s how Justin Timberlake feels. The pop singer and dad to 3-and-a-half-year-old Silas Randall opens up about it all, including how social media has affected his parenting, in his new book Hindsight: & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me.
“It was important to us to choose how to share him with the world because this is a whole new era for me”, writes Timberlake, reflecting on the birth of his son. The 37-year-old goes on to add, “It’s no longer just about me. I have a wife, a child–a family. It’s terrifying. It’s invigorating. It’s more meaningful than anything I’ve ever been a part of”.
Even now, there are very few photos of little Silas online, a rarity in a time when celeb kiddos have entire fan followings. It’s a decision that Timberlake and Biel made in an attempt to protect their son’s privacy as much as possible: “We wanted him to be just for us, just for a little while”, the former *NSYNC member explained.
After all, he knows that it’s about more than Instagram likes and retweets. In Hindsight, he says that his favorite family moments are the little ones. “When my son smiles at me. When my wife looks at me a certain way … These are the moments that are so big in my life now”.
And social media isn’t the only thing Timberlake talks about in his book. One of the most relatable statements from inside? When he confesses that despite the struggles, he wouldn’t trade being a dad for the world. He jokes, “the real winning at parenthood is getting to wake up every morning and fail over and over again”.
